How to Improve Your Eye Health This Year

glasseshealthIn January you begin the new year by developing specific New Years resolutions for yourself. The resolutions might vary from picking up a new instrument to getting a gym membership (and actually attending more than once a month.) But it’s also important to make an appointment to visit your Indianapolis Optometrist as part of your yearly checkup.

Your health needs to be a priority throughout the year and I’m here to help you when it comes to improving your vision and maintaining good eye health throughout the year.

As time goes by and days are being checked off the calendar,  these resolutions get pushed aside. You celebrate the Super Bowl on the couch with a big bag of chips and stay inside to avoid the cold, avoiding the gym altogether. Don’t let your health slip through the cracks.

Helpful Tips to Get on Track with Good Eye Health From Your Indianapolis Optometrist

Quit smoking:

You might have started the New Year with this resolution and now it’s time to reconsider it. Smoking is not just damaging to your organs, but also to your eyes! Smoking can increase your risks a number of eye disorders and diseases including cataracts, macular degeneration, and irritated eyes.

Schedule an Appointment with your Indianapolis Optometrist

To make sure you are on track with good health, make a Comprehensive Eye Exam with your Indianapolis Optometrist us at our Noblesville or Indianapolis locations. We’ll give you a Retinal Screening that will check your health for problems such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts and set you up with a prescription for new glasses for the new year!

Upgrade your Glasses

At the end of the year you might have scheduled an eye doctor appointment to use your vision insurance and health savings benefits and now is the time to use that prescription to update your eyewear! Are those “hipster glasses” still popular? Stop by our Indianapolis Optometrist locations to find out which glasses are the most functional and fashionable for you!

Protect your Eyes From the Sun

Even though it’s not summertime, Indiana has been as bright as ever recently! While outside or driving around Indianapolis, make sure you protect your eyes from the bright UV rays with sunglasses. Whether you need prescription sunglasses or just want to look at our collection of designer frames. Indianapolis Optometrist Dr. Amy Walden & her staff at both locations to help you find and fit you for those needs.

Drink Loads of Water

Make sure you always get an adequate amount of water each day. Dehydration will keep your body from producing enough tears, causing irritation and discomfort.

Take Breaks

If you work on a computer all day make sure you take a quick break every 20 minutes. Stare at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds and then refocus on your computer screen. Doing this will help you prevent computer-related eye strain.
